Renewable hydrogen, and renewable and reduced-carbon gasoline

Based in Victoria, British Columbia (BC), Canada, Blue Fuel Energy (BFE) is a privately-held company that is developing several world-scale, energy-related projects bridging our current carbon-based economy with a future low-carbon economy. The projects are being developed in northeastern BC, a region with an extraordinary convergence of renewable energy (wind, hydro) and natural gas resources.

Blue Fuel Energy will produce transportation fuels targeted at North American jurisdictions with a low-carbon fuel standard, such as BC and California. One such fuel is renewable Blue Fuel Hydrogen, ideal for mobility, energy storage, and industrial applications. Another is Blue Fuel Gasoline, comprising renewable and reduced-carbon gasoline streams, both of which can be seamlessly blended into existing gasoline pools.

BFE has rights to a 400-plus hectare site in the District of Chetwynd that enjoys access to requisite services and logistics.

BFE is collaborating with several multinational corporations, and is affiliated with Aeolis Wind Power, developer of BC’s first large-scale wind power installation, and Canadian Methanol (CMC), focused on producing methanol for the methanol-to-olefins market and the transportation fuels market in China.

  1. Use renewable electricity to power an array of electrolyzers to produce hydrogen;
  2. Catalytically combine the hydrogen with carbon dioxide to produce methanol;
  3. Dehydrate the methanol over a catalyst to create dimethyl ether (DME);
  4. Dehydrate the DME over a catalyst to produce gasoline using the ExxonMobilMTG process.

All technology for the above steps is mature.

Integration of renewable and reduced-carbon fuels production

Blue Fuel Energy will integrate renewable fuels production with reduced-carbon fuels production in order to:

  • Utilize the waste oxygen generated through electrolysis as a feedstock;
  • Reduce GHG emissions;
  • Reduce unit capital costs of both processes, particularly in oxygen production, methanol conversion, distillation, product storage and waste treatment;
  • Improve the energy efficiency of both processes through complete energy integration.

The integrated operations will generate tremendous amounts of waste heat, giving rise to the opportunity to build an array of greenhouses and fish ponds that will provide produce and fish for the region and beyond. These facilities will be developed in partnership with local First Nations.

How Blue Fuel benefits BC and the Peace

Production of Blue Fuel Hydrogen and Blue Fuel Gasoline will augment BC’s current plan to become a major LNG exporter and will deliver significant benefits to the province. The CO2 emissions-reducing characteristics of Blue Fuel’s integrated process will help the province develop its natural gas reserves AND meet its GHG emissions reduction targets. It will also provide the province with new export commodities and domestically produced fuels that will help it meet its low-carbon fuel standard requirements (reduce the carbon intensity of the fuels pool 10% by 2020).

For the Peace, Blue Fuel Hydrogen and Blue Fuel Gasoline (as well as produce and fish) are vehicles for transforming the regional economy from one based on the export of raw materials to one based on the export of value-added products, a shift that will generate even more capital investment and sustainable, high-value jobs.
